[ the adamantine tunnels are a fascination to lúthien, who longs for her home in beleriand — and while dwarven mines are not nearly the same thing, still she feels she must see what their kingdom looks like here, if the dwarves' handiwork is just as beautiful in this land as it is back home.
she very nearly makes it to the tunnels on her own; luck has her meeting joric on the way there, to accompany her to see what the tunnels hold.
it feels as if it has been hours that they have wandered, in the darkness of the tunnels, the pathways leading steadily deeper into the mountains; until lúthien stops short. ]
Do you hear that? [ she whispers.
tap. tap. tap.
there's a noise, to be sure... but what is making it is another matter. ]
[ Joric has never been too fond of being indoors - or anywhere with some sort of roof over his head. Inside was dark, smoky, and where sick people awaited death. Outside was sunlight and fresh, bracing air. But he goes inside the tunnels nevertheless because they must explore as much as they can to complete their mission.
Meeting up with Lúthien pleases him because it means he can focus on keeping her safe instead of how unsettling he finds this place. At her alerting him to a noise he stops and strains his ears to listen. If only he'd managed to find a fox or wolf before arriving here that he could have communicated with. Then they'd have another set of ears. As it stands, it's only his half-orc ears and he's shaking his head about to say no when the taps come again, loud enough for him to hear this time. ]
Wait. I do. Down that way?
[ It's whispered back to her as he points down one of the paths before them. It's worth investigating, but it may lead to trouble as well. ]
[ she nods, seeming both wary and intrigued at once... but as joric makes no move to try and stop her, she starts making her way down the path towards where it winds around a corner deeper into the mountains; her feet are quiet on the stone, barely leaving prints in the dust. ]
I cannot see what makes the noise, yet, [ she whispers as she looks back to joric... but at that moment, they can hear the tapping louder than before, tap-tap-tap, like sharp feet against the stone floor.
