name: Joric
canon: Original Character
age: 33
canon point: a year and a half after having a magic spell put on his mind, plus another year and a half being on a space station in another game.
history:
To understand Joric, one must first learn of the land from which he comes: the nation of Fjelldalr. In the north central region of an unnamed continent lies an impressive range of mountains that are collectively referred to by this name, though in actuality this place is a loose confederation of mountain clans that band together in times of war or to trade women between clans. There is a king who is more like a general in charge of their collective forces as a standing army while the clans are mainly self-governing under a jarl. Each clan is composed of a village where there is a communal mead hall, but families tend to live in their own small houses. Life is somewhat harsh in the cold mountains, but the people are hardy and put great stock in following their gods. While there is plenty of work to be done in these semi-communal clans, there has only been one profession Joric could see himself doing: being a soldier. It's what his father did, and his father, and so on and so forth. Growing up, Joric was used to his father being away to defend their mountains and he grew up the third of five children. His older siblings were undisciplined without the watchful eye of their father and an overworked mother, but by the time his younger siblings were born the skirmishes to the south were over and his father was home more often. As a child Joric considered his elder brother and sister to be bad while his younger brother and sister were good. And what of Joric, stuck in the middle? He saw himself as having the capacity for either.
In his late teens, Joric left the Vængrskr clan to join the nation's army where he showed a knack for military tactics, especially coming up with new plans on short notice. There were now invasions from the east as the foreign nation that bordered them wished to mine in the mountains and the people of Fjelldalr wished to protect their land and minerals. By the time his younger brother Karl joined him as a soldier, Joric was already battle scarred and savvy from these encounters. Things finally came to a head at the Battle of Endless Night where both sides fought under the bright full moon and into the dawn. Only with the light did the enemy see how few of them were left and they retreated. It was a hard won victory and Karl had become one of the casualties — dying with Joric kneeling by his side. By this time the family was nearly all gone. His youngest sibling Astrid had died as a child from illness while his eldest brother had been executed for banditry. His other sister had been chosen to go to another clan to marry there and he hadn't seen her since. His father had passed away from long years of warfare catching up to him and putting him in poor health. And after hearing of Karl's death, their mother didn't live for much longer. With this latest battle resulting in having lost so many soldiers of their own, a council of mages within the army convinced the king to allow soldiers to be put under a magic spell that would make then fiercer in battle. Worried at things getting out of hand, the king allowed them to attempt such on one volunteer. Not wishing for another family to lose a brother as he did and having no family left, Joric volunteered for this magical experiment to enhance a warrior's berserker rage in battle to make him a living weapon.
The experimentations began. Mages are not all powerful beings that can cast spells with a wave of their hands. Most spells take a good deal of time and concentration to cast, which is why they often served as healers in the army or in clan villages. A mage simply doesn't have the time to cast an offensive or defensive spell on the battlefield before they would be overrun with arrows, cavalry, or foot soldiers. Magical experimentation is rare, and no new spells had been developed for a long time. The council gathered and started focusing on breaking into Joric's mind to place the spell on him. It took several attempts and put Joric through a great deal of physical pain and mental toil before the spell was properly cast. Unfortunately, the magic laid on him worked too well, and he was deemed too dangerous to remain unsupervised. His rage episodes would manifest outside of battle and would cause him to black out while his body took over, trying to destroy everyone around him. Often he was chained up in order to control him during these episodes. Nothing could snap him out of it and the rage only stopped when his body had exhausted itself from the effort of trying to attack whomever was close by. He was assigned a mage healer to be his handler, but once it became clear that the mages didn't know how to reverse the spell they put on him, he chose a moment while unchained to deceive the healer and he then ran away from the mountains in search of a cure. This was an incredibly hard decision for him to make, as those who abandoned the army without permission were deemed cowards and would be executed on sight if they ever returned to the mountains. Life among the snowy peaks, arduous cliffs, and green valleys of evergreen trees had been all Joric had ever known and now he could never return on pain of death. As he traveled, in search of a cure, Joric often took short mercenary jobs to make a little gold in between stays alone out in the wild away from people. Doing dangerous work was something he purposefully wanted to do in order to prove to the gods that he was no coward that didn't want to fight. He wasn't afraid to die, but he wanted to die knowing the gods still favored him and would allow him into the afterlife meant for brave souls.
(CRAU: While dreaming Joric was approached and asked if he would help collect chaotic orbs from different worlds if in return he could undo his greatest regret. Seeing this as an opportunity to go back in time so the rage spell was never placed on him, he agreed. He and others were put on a space station called the Ximilia while their leaders prepped them for missions to retrieve orbs that were disturbing the populaces of various planets. While there he was prescribed daily pills to take to hold back his rage and found himself growing friendly with the others like him who wished to undo their regrets. The missions were varied (sky pirates, D&D-esque, suburbia, etc.) but the goal was always to locate the orb and collect it. Joric learned a great deal about technology and various people and though he struggled at times, he was never unwilling to do his duty. In the end, all the orbs were collected and his wish granted, so the rage spell was removed from his mind. However, instead of being transported home, he ended up in Etraya.)
abilities:
Joric was trained as a soldier and has skills with a greatsword as well as hand-to-hand combat. Joric himself isn't inherently magical and cannot use strength beyond his normal human body. However, he's built strong and hardy, and coming from the mountains the cold bothers him much less than the average person, though on the flip side, he gets overheated easily. This can be considered a "power" as his race of people has a naturally higher cold resistance.
personality:
Positive:
Protective: Joric became a soldier to protect those who couldn't protect themselves. He feels there's not much he's good for, but he was built tall and strong, so he might as well throw his physical form at threats and hit them. He sees it as simply something he can do, so he should. The gods favor those who are brave and risk their lives, knowing it could end at any moment, so they welcome all brave people to their afterlife of Folkheim.
Honest: The people of Joric's mountain home are honest as a matter of course. A liar in their society is a coward, and cowards can't go to the afterlife, therefore they are raised from the crib to be honest people. This leads them to come across as blunt and sometimes rude, but the truth is far easier to own than to construct a winding path of lies that are easy to mix up or forget. Also if Joric doesn't want to reveal something he just... doesn't say it. It's not lying if you choose to stay silent.
Brave: The one underlying theme that permeates Fjelldalr society is to live one's life bravely. The main gods of their pantheon whom the people believe watch over them look for brave individuals to welcome into the afterlife: a place called Folkheim. This paradise of everlasting life is what awaits those who please the gods. Bravery comes in many forms. Some interpret it as recklessness, while others see it as simply facing your fears. It isn't only the brave warriors that follow this teaching. Everyone down to the smallest, most sickly child tries to be brave so they can achieve eternity in Folkheim.
Negative:
Blunt: Being honest means Joric often seems rude or short with people because he doesn't worry about hurt feelings or sugar-coating things. Honesty is best, so clearly nothing should get in the way of that, right? With time he can learn to become more gentle with people's feelings, but on first meetings usually doesn't consider them.
Stubborn: Being a seasoned soldier that's survived everything life has thrown at him so far, Joric believes his way of doing things to be right and has a hard time backing down from that assumption. While he'll listen to different points of view, his will is like the unmovable mountain: no matter how much the wind blows against it, the mountain stands tall. So too does Joric. Being stubborn is also his way of exercising some control when he feels he has none.
Self-loathing: Warriors in his land are fierce, praised for their strength and cunning, but there are times Joric is out of his element and unable to contribute and be useful. He has no magic powers or brains for technology so if an issue needs either of those to solve it, he feels useless. A great deal of his self-worth is tied up in being useful to others through his strength and ability to protect, so if he can't do that he's worthless.
